Post-Doctoral Fellow Position Open to study the role of Mucin Hyperexpression and Mucociliary Clearance in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Description:  The Rowe laboratory specializes on in vivo modeling of disorders of mucociliary clearance including cystic fibrosis and chronic bronchitis, and the discovery of novel therapeutics for these diseases.  Our lab has ongoing projects that model smoking related chronic bronchitis in higher order mammals including ferrets (Raju SV et al JCI Insight 2016). We have recently established a collaboration with the laboratory of Dr. David Schwartz (University of Colorado-Denver) to understand the role of mucin hyperexpression on the pathophysiology of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), and are generating a link between mucin hyperexpression and delayed mucociliary clearance.  The successful candidate will pursue the mechanistic and physiologic details of this relationship.  The candidate is expected to establish a ferret colony and a model of bleomycin-induced fibrosis, characterize the model, and investigate the effects on the airway pathology and physiology (specifically related to mucociliary clearance). The candidate will have extensive interactions with local mentorship (Rowe, Solomon, Thannickal) as well as collaborative relationship with Dr. David A. Schwartz who originally discovered the connection to mucin expression.

The successful candidate must be innovative and interested in pursuing an independent research effort upon completion of the fellowship.  The individual should have experience designing, interpreting, and performing experiments using physiologic measures and/or imaging, management of animal models/colonies, and molecular biological techniques.  Prior experience with handling larger mammalian colonies is highly valued.  The position will require designing and performing experiments with minimal input from the mentor and writing manuscripts for publication and presentation.  Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree required
