Mentor:  Dr.  Brian C. Samuels, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Ophthalmology bsamuels@uabmc.edu

Postdoctoral Researcher Position in the department of Ophthalmology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

Research will be conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Brian C. Samuels MD, PhD in collaboration with Dr. Massimo Fazio, PhD. The position involves the acquisition and manual delineation of optic nerve head and retinal tissue layers from optical coherence tomography (OCT) clinical and/or research images.

The focus of his research will be to study the role of intraocular pressure in the biomechanical response of the optic nerve head structure and how these modulate glaucoma progression.

His/her duties will be:

  • Acquire the Optic Nerve Head (ONH) and/or retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans in normal animals and our animals with experimental glaucoma.
  • Learn the anatomic structures of the optic nerve head and retina in order to manually delineate the anatomic structures and create 3D point clouds that will be used to inform 3D models.
  • Work with our biomechanics/computational collaborators (Dr Massimo Fazio and his laboratory personnel) and assist them in developing computational algorithms to assess optic nerve head biomechanics. Teamwork and good communication skills are required.

Highly motivated candidates with strong research background in imaging, image analysis, animal research, and anatomy/pathology interests or related fields are especially encouraged to apply.  In addition, a background in bioengineering/biomechanics would be beneficial but not required for this position.

A Ph.D. or equivalent degree is required. Experience with image acquisition and image analysis is highly desired.  Additionally knowledge of programing in Mathematica, Java, C++, or Mathlab languages would be helpful in our collaborations with Dr. Fazio’s team.
