Mentor: Stijn De Langhe, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham, E-mail: delanghe@uab.edu

One postdoctoral position is available in Dr. De Langhe’s laboratory at UAB. Our laboratory focuses on mechanisms underlying tissue remodeling after major injury to mouse and human lungs. The scope of projects centered on this theme range from basic studies of distal airway stem/progenitor cells responding to alveolar injury. Planned projects will involve substantial biochemistry and organoid biology in vitro, in vivo functional assays in injury models, high resolution microscopy, and genetically modified mice as reporters and tools for lineage tracing.

Develop a signaling “toolkit” that converts the mal-adaptive microenvironment of injured lungs into a receptive environment either for endogenous epithelial cell stem/progenitor expansion or for engraftment and improved function after transplantation of exogenous normal stem/progenitors.  This project will require improved understanding of the key drivers and regulation of distal airway epithelial stem/progenitor cell mobilization, migration, and differentiation after major lung injury.

There is certainly also opportunity for novel research directions that a new scientist in the lab is motivated to initiate and pursue. We expect the successful candidate to have experience in cell and molecular biology, a genuine interest in repair processes including that of the lung, experience with mouse models, and at least one first author publication. Strong organizational skills, lab notebook practices, and attention to detail are vital.

About the University:

UAB pursues the frontiers of education, research and health care and strives to be one of the most dynamic and productive universities of the 21st century. Our strategic plan, Forging the Future, is our roadmap for the next five years of growth. It outlines goals that share three themes: increasing access to our world-class educational programs, patient care, and research; enhancing the alignment of people and programs to reflect the interdisciplinary nature of 21st-century curricula, scientific investigation, and creative scholarship; and investing in grand ideas to tackle major problems facing society.

About our Postdoc office:

UAB is committed to the development and success of outstanding postdoctoral scientists. Here at UAB, nearly 250 postdoctoral fellows are training currently in a variety of disciplines, including dentistry, engineering, health professions, medicine, natural sciences and mathematics, public health, optometry, and social and behavioral sciences. Competitive postdoc awards are available including internships, grant incentives, funds to enhance education and collaboration outside UAB, and teaching opportunities at local universities. There is also a Postdoc Research Day with monetary awards. The OPE strongly encourages UAB research mentors to follow the National Research Service Award stipend level guidelines, and postdoctoral scholars qualify for health, life, and other insurances. They also have the right to participate in the university’s 403(b) program and enjoy vacation, sick leave, maternity/paternity leave, and other benefits.
