One NIH funded post-doctoral fellowship is available immediately in the laboratory of Dr. Peter H. King (Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Neurology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine). The research focus is on molecular dysregulation in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) including biomarkers of neuroinflammation peripherally in the neuromuscular system and centrally, with an emphasis on both mechanistic and translational directions. ALS is an incurable disease and the etiology remains obscure, making this type of research a high priority. Dr. King oversees a comprehensive ALS clinic, and patients within the clinic participate in the research studies, providing samples to the laboratory for molecular analysis. The ideal candidate should be a recent graduate (PhD, MD or both), self-motivated, creative, and have excellent laboratory skills, preferably with some experience in neurobiology. The candidate must be a team player and be able to work with a diversity of personnel associated with the laboratory including collaborators, nurses, physicians, and junior professors. Desirable skills include flow immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, RNA sequencing, primary cell culture, basic molecular biology techniques, and data analysis. In addition to human materials, the laboratory uses other animal and cell culture-based models of ALS. During his or her time in the laboratory, the fellow will be given opportunities to apply for training grants and will be mentored in all aspects of career development in research. The stipend will be commensurate with experience according to the NIH guidelines.
