Mentor: Yogesh Vohra, PhD, Professor, Department of Physics, Associate Dean, College of Arts and Sciences Director, UAB Center for Nanoscale Materials and Biointegration, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, AL,

A National Science Foundation (NSF) supported postdoctoral scholar position is available in the high pressure materials research group in the Department of Physics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). The postdoctoral scholar will be involved in the study of novel metastable phases and transformation kinetic in transition metals and alloys under extreme conditions of pressure and temperatures using the synchrotron x-ray diffraction techniques. The research studies also extend to electrical and magnetic measurements on metals and alloys at high pressures and low-temperatures using designer diamond anvil cell. The postdoctoral scholar will have access to the state of the art materials growth and characterization facilities at UAB including Diamond Microfabrication Laboratory for customized designer diamonds and two-stage diamond micro-anvils for ultra-high pressure research, SEM, XPS, AFM, Nanoindentation, and Raman spectroscopy.

The position is available beginning September 1, 2016 and initial appointment will be for a period of one year with a salary range of $45,000 - $50,000/year. Based on satisfactory progress in meeting project milestones, this postdoctoral appointment can be extended for a period of up to two additional years.

A Ph.D. in physics or a related discipline is preferable with relevant experience in high pressure research.

Applicants should electronically submit a CV, a description of their past research accomplishments and publications, and the names (including address, tel. and email address) of at least three references to Dr. Yogesh Vohra (

The applications received on or before July 31st, 2016 will be given full consideration. The Department of Physics and the University of Alabama at Birmingham are committed to building a culturally diverse workforce and strongly encourage applications from women and individuals from underrepresented groups. UAB is an Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity employer.
