Position Summary

The UAB CI Therapy Research Group, under the co-direction of Drs. Taub, and Uswatte, is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to support work on a newly awarded R01 from the National Institute of Aging. The goal of the funded project is to test in adults with chronic cognitive impairment after stroke whether a set of behavioral techniques for transferring therapeutic gains from the treatment to everyday setting enhances the gains in carrying out everyday tasks with important cognitive components observed after cognitive training. The behavioral techniques are adapted from Constraint-Induced Movement therapy. The cognitive training is the cognitive processing speed game, Double Decision (also knows as Useful Field of View or UFOV Training), developed by Karlene Ball, PhD, and collaborators. In addition to Drs. Taub and Ball, there will be opportunities to work with Drs. Gitendra Uswatte (rehabilitation psychology), David Knight (neuroimaging), Victor Mark (behavioral neurology), Amy Knight (neuropsychology),  and Timothy Elliott (rehabilitation psychology). The primary appointments of Drs. Taub, Ball, Uswatte, and D. Knight are in the Department of Psychology; those of Drs. Mark and A. Knight are in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Dr. Elliott is in the Department of Educational Psychology at Texas A&M. UAB ranks 27th in the nation in NIH funding, and features an active office of postdoctoral education.

Our lab has particular interest in the fellow taking responsibility for the study’s focal family caregiver and follow-up components of the intervention, which are new and can benefit from development. Other high priority areas are development and delivery of other aspects of the intervention and data management and analysis. There will also be opportunities in engage in multi-modal neuroimaging collection and analysis. Writing-up of data for publication and involvement in grant applications will be desirable and encouraged. Opportunities to supervise undergraduate and graduate students will be present.

The position is for one year initially, with up to three additional years contingent on satisfactory performance.


Minimum Requirements

An advanced research or clinical degree is required for this position. We seek individuals with a PhD in Psychology or related fields with training in performing behavioral interventions. Individuals with an MD, DO, ND, or other advanced clinical degree are also eligible to apply if they have significant research experience and significant behavioral training. We will consider strong candidates who are ABD, if minimal work remains to complete doctoral training. We will also consider candidates who have already completed one or more years of post-doctoral training. The Fellow will be expected to be a strong scientific writer and have strong data management and analysis skills.

Other Requirements

Expertise in health psychology or behavioral medicine, particularly working with family caregivers, is highly desirable. Experience with and knowledge about cognitive training and neuropsychological testing would also be desirable, as would experience with neuroimaging. Possession of unique statistical and data-analytic techniques (e.g., analysis of longitudinal data, linear mixed modeling, analysis of interviews using LIWC) is helpful, but not required. Strong communication, organizational, and team-building skills will be a plus.
