It is my pleasure to join faculty, staff and students in officially welcoming our new Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost.

As a global leader in biomedical research and patient care, UAB continues to advocate ardently for sustained and predictable federal funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

I want to congratulate again the winners of our 5th Annual Excellence in Business Awards Top 25, hosted earlier today by UAB National Alumni Society.

Yesterday I was pleased to attend the unveiling of a monument to UAB excellence in innovation and sustainability—the construction of our Solar Decathlon team’s Surviv(AL) House. We’ve been eagerly following our team’s progress on the house and we were delighted to showcase the fruits of their labor.

Please plan to join the UAB community and others at the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center Jemison Concert Hall at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, for our third event in an ongoing series of forums dedicated to civil discourse hosted by the UAB Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

We are aware there is confusion and concern over the rapidly evolving situation concerning the Executive Order that has suspended entry into the United States for non-US citizens from a number of countries. More information on this Executive Order as it relates to higher education, including the affected countries, can be found here.

UAB values our international students, faculty and staff. Our diversity forms the fabric of the rich and vibrant community that transforms us into responsible and engaged global citizens. For those faculty, staff, and students who might be affected by this Executive Order, we would advise that you defer any travel outside of the U.S. for the time being except in a family emergency.

If you have been affected by this Executive Order or if you have any concerns about travel plans for yourself, your family, students or employees, please contact Catherine Crowe, director of the Office of International Student and Scholar Services, at (205) 934-1252, or via email at This email address is being protected from spambots.
