their biochemistry, chemistry, enzymology and molecular biology - a lab for cholangiophiles


Stephen Barnes, PhD

The Barnes' lab has been studying bile acids since Dr. Barnes joined the Academic Medical Unit at the Royal Free Hospital in London in 1972 under the tutelage of Professor Barbara H. Billing and Dr. John Morris.

Over the next five years, he contributed to the study of the methods of analysis of bile acids (fluorimetry and gas chromatography) in several biological systems (patients with various types of liver disease and animal models of bowel disease associated with liver disease). He also carried out studies with Dr. John Gollan using a perfused rat kidney preparation that showed there was very efficient bile acid transport in the proximal tubules of the kidney.

Stimulated by a visit to the lab of Dr. Alan Hofmann at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in 1977 he accepted a position in the Division of Gastroenterology in the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has remained at UAB ever since. He moved his lab to the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology in 1979.

He is a Professor in the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, Environmental Health Sciences, Genetics, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Vision Sciences. He is the Director of the Center for Nutrient-Gene Interaction, Associate Director of the Purdue-UAB Botanicals Center for Age-Related Disease and was Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Mass Spectrometry/Proteomics Core Facility from 1993-2009. He was appointed the Director of the Targeted Metabolomics and Proteomics Laboratory (TMPL) in 2009. Dr. Barnes also serves as a member of the National Advisory Council on Complementary and Alternative Medicine (2007-2010) and the NIH Council of Councils (2009-2012).
