Editor's note: A new extension for this policy was announced in September 2022. The information in this article now is outdated. Read more.

During the past two years, employees have been allowed to carry up to three times their annual accrual of the vacation time provided by UAB, UAB Hospital, UAB LLC and UAHSF — an exception to policy that is set to expire at the end of this calendar year.

Because pandemic-related restrictions on gathering and travel made it difficult to use paid leave, employees were allowed to keep and roll over any unused vacation time under an extension approved by UAB and UAB Medicine in 2020. As use of vacation time returns to pre-pandemic levels, the policy exemption will expire as intended.

On Dec. 31, 2022, the total maximum accrual will revert to two times the annual vacation accrual, and beginning Jan. 1, 2023, any excess vacation will be converted to sick time to align with the Vacation - HR Policy 301. See table below for accrual details.

For any employee who leaves UAB, the maximum vacation payout is still 22 days/176 hours.  A copy of the full Vacation - HR Policy 301 can be found in the UAB Policies and Procedures Library.
