This week, UAB begins rolling out information about open enrollment to provide benefit-eligible employees time to review upcoming changes and make informed decisions for themselves and their families.

2023 OPE 11. Open enrollment dates are set

UAB’s annual open enrollment for benefits will begin 7 a.m. Oct. 21 and conclude 5 p.m. Nov. 7. Eligible employees can choose among dental, vision and health insurance plans, plus voluntary life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance and tax-deferred spending accounts for health and dependent care for 2023. You can review all the information you need in the open enrollment toolkit anytime on the UAB for Me portal.

2023 OPE 2 new2. Action is required

This is an active open enrollment, meaning any benefit-eligible employee who does not select a 2023 health care plan option during the enrollment period will not have UAB-provided health care coverage (medical, dental, vision) beginning January 2023. Detailed offerings of these plans will be provided in coming weeks to better enable you to make the best choice for your household.

UAB has been able to keep dental rates flat since 2018 and vision rates flat since 2015. Most recently all employees saw a reduction in vision premiums for 2021 and 2022.  Vision and dental rates once again will stay flat again in 2023.

2023 OPE 44. Expect changes to medical premium rates

UAB has been able to keep most medical premium rates flat for several years.  Most notably, there has been no increase to single or family tiers on three of UAB’s four plan offerings since 2018.  Viva Choice has remained flat since it was first offered in 2017.  While UAB has been able to keep increases low or flat, increases are expected for medical plans in 2023.

2023 OPE 5 new5. Detailed information will be available in coming weeks

As weekly articles specific to various benefit plan offerings are rolled out, detailed open enrollment information will be housed in the UAB for Me portal.  UAB will offer employees the opportunity to ask questions and get answers before choosing benefits. More information will be provided as those plans are finalized. Meanwhile, contact your school/department HR consultant or the UAB Benefits office, benefits@uab.edu or 934-3458.
