Vineeta Kumar, M.D., professor in the Division of Nephrology, is one of 12 faculty selected to receive the 2019 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Loy Vaughan, associate professor of mathematics, clocked 50 years of service at UAB before retiring in January. The West End native remembers introducing the Apple II into the mathematics classroom in the late 1970s, playing handball with Gene Bartow and seeing his wife and children all earn medical degrees — all while watching UAB becoming the epicenter of the city in which he grew up.

Charlie Monroe, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, was one of 12 faculty selected to receive the 2019 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.   

Maninder Kaur, BDS, assistant professor in the Department of Periodontology, was one of 12 faculty selected to receive the 2019 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

John Kearney, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor in the Department of Microbiology, will be honored for 45 years of service to UAB during the annual Service Awards banquet March 6.

Keith Gurley, Ed.D., associate professor in the Department of Human Studies, is one of 12 faculty selected to receive the 2019 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Barbara Gower, professor and vice chair for Research in the Department of Nutrition Sciences, is the winner of the 2019 Sam Brown Bridge Builder Award for her interdisciplinary, collaborative efforts across campus.

Edward Hook, Virginia Wadley Bradley and Mark Prichard were honored as emeritus professors for exceptional service to the university and their profession.

Monica Baskin, professor of preventive medicine, is the winner of the 2019 Odessa Woolfolk Community Service Award for her work to influence change in the field of health disparities action and research.

Gustavo “Tavo” Heudebert, M.D., interim dean of the UAB School of Medicine Montgomery Regional Medical Campus, is the recipient of the highest award for teaching presented by UAB. He will be recognized during the Faculty Convocation Sept. 10.

Philosophy Professor Greg Pence, Ph.D., who “could’ve been someone who never got a regular job,” is the 2019 winner of UAB’s Ireland Prize for Scholarly Distinction.

Joe Talty, program manager in the Collat School of Business Graduate School of Management, is the Employee of the Month for August.
