Catch a ride with new rideshare service

Click to enlarge.UAB employees and other city denizens can book rides instantly to many popular locations in downtown and West Birmingham for $1.50 per trip with Birmingham On-Demand, a vanpool service funded jointly by the City of Birmingham and the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham for a six-month pilot.

“Birmingham On-Demand is a great new service that can help UAB employees reduce their carbon footprint when running errands downtown or commuting to work,” said Brian Atkinson, UAB transportation demand manager. “Whether it’s biking, cycling, taking the bus or vanpooling, we always encourage employee to support UAB’s mission to make its campus more sustainable by choosing a more environmentally friendly way to get around town.”

Birmingham On-Demand provides inexpensive ride service to many popular locations, including more than 45 medical facilities, three grocery stores, eight pharmacies, 13 banks and credit unions and more than 10 parks. The service is available 6 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday.

Save time on your work commute and reduce air pollution in Jefferson and Shelby counties with help from CommuteSmart. Earn as much as $70 in the first 90 days and $25 per quarter afterward for logging your alternative commutes by Birmingham On-Demand or carpool, bike, bus, walking or teleworking.

Book rides and track van location in real-time using the Via app, available for iOS and Android; wait times average 15 minutes or less inside the service zone, which extends approximately to the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex on the north and Five Points South on the south, with the Red Mountain Expressway serving as the eastern boundary and the Crossplex as the western boundary. Riders also can call 205-236-0768 to book rides, and extra passengers in each party cost $0.75 per rider in addition to the booking rider.

Rides are paid for using the Via app and require a credit card or a pre-paid debit card, which can be purchased at more than 10 locations inside the service zone. Weekly passes also are available for $14, with monthly passes costing $54; passholders can take up to four rides per day. All vans are wheelchair-accessible.
