Through UAB’s new membership in the Amazon Career Choice Partner Network, eligible Amazon associates can receive tuition assistance while pursuing one of the university’s 55 bachelor’s degrees and 86 minors — with both on-campus and online options available.
As a new set of students joins the Blazer family, refresh your memory on the resources UAB offers to help new students adjust and succeed during their time with the university.
1. Mental health services
UAB offers myriad mental health services to students, including distance counseling from Student Counseling Services, crisis and emergency services and hotline access, the Blazers Bounce Back resiliency hub and many online tools, such as Kognito Mental Health interactive training, Therapy Assistance Online, Togetherall and more.
Plus, encourage new students to download B Well UAB, a student-envisioned, employee-built mental health resource app that collects UAB services and information in a central, easily accessible location.
2. Academic services
Direct students to their academic advisers for information, assistance and encouragement throughout their time at UAB — they can help students identify goals, develop educational plans, get clarity on degree requirements and schedule-planning and more. Students can find their adviser(s) listed on their Student Profile page in BlazerNET.
The Vulcan Materials Academic Success Center fosters undergraduate student success by creating a supportive environment and delivering academic services that encourage goal achievement and degree completion, such as tutoring, supplemental instruction, academic advising, success advising, workshops and study hours. Tutoring appointments can be made online.
UAB Disability Support Services helps create a campus where individuals with disabilities have equal access to programs, activities and opportunities by identifying and removing barriers, providing individualized services and facilitating accommodations. Students also can register with DSS online via their portal in a four-step process, and DSS staff are available for questions at 205-934-4205, dss@uab.edu or Hill Student Center Room 409. Students also can access DSS-related resources such as video tutorials and accessible campus maps on the DSS website.
And the UAB Writing Center can help students with any kind of writing, at any stage of the process — whether they need help brainstorming ideas for a history paper, revising a personal statement or editing a lab report. Writing Center services are free; make an appointment online.
3. UAB Libraries resources
UAB Libraries is a member of the Center for Research Libraries, in which member libraries’ collections hold approximately 5 million newspapers, journals, books, pamphlets, dissertations, archives, government publications and more. Blazers also have access to the engineering-, chemistry- and physics-focused Linda Hall Library, which holds more than 500,000 monograph volumes and 48,000 journals, and Elsevier, a major publisher of science, technology, engineering and mathematics literature and a world-leading provider that produces and controls 25% of the world’s science, technology, engineering and math literature.
UAB’s librarians have also created more than 235 subject, course and how-to guides at guides.library.uab.edu, which can help students use the resources and services at UAB Libraries effectively. UAB also has implemented a course reserves program, in which course books owned by UAB Libraries can be placed on reserve for student access.
4. Campus life
Students who don’t live in on-campus housing can find support from Off-Campus Student and Family Engagement, which hosts an Off-Campus Student Council, meet-and-greets during Blazer Welcome, child-friendly activities in the Off-Campus Student Lounge for parenting students and more. 5. Veterans services
UAB Veterans Services hosts the UAB Student Veterans Association and provides Green Zone training for UAB employees to help them gain a better understanding of veterans’ and service members’ experiences and to offer tools to better assist them as they transition to the academic and professional worlds. Veterans Services interacts with more than 4,000 students who are veterans to advise them on Veterans Affairs benefits and policies and support them throughout their journey with UAB.
