groundbreaking (L-R) UAB President Joseph Volker, Gov. Albert Brewer and College of General Studies Dean George Campbell attended the groundbreaking ceremony for a new academic campus Jan. 30, 1970.

Faculty member Hubert Harper remembers UAB was in a “blighted environment … streets full of litter … some old houses still standing in the progressive decay … In this depressing environment … we stood in the dying day and the rising chill and witnessed” the groundbreaking of the new expansion.

The first three buildings in the new academic campus were dedicated in ceremonies held in 1973.

Today, several new projects are under construction on this now 100-block campus: academic buildings for the Collat School of Business and College of Arts and Sciences, expansion of the School of Nursing building with its updated pedestrian crosswalk, an ROTC facility, intramural fields and a police headquarters.
