Tinsley R. Harrison, M.D., (right), UAB’s first Distinguished Faculty Lecturer, presented his talk, “Witches and Doctors,” March 3, 1964, in Birmingham’s Parliament House Hotel, then located on the west side of 20th Street South between Fourth and Fifth avenues. The DFL Award is the highest honor awarded by UAB to a member of the medical center faculty.
The lecture, which now takes place in the fall, will be presented this year by Mona Fouad, M.D., professor and director of the Division of Preventive Medicine, founding director of UAB’s Minority Health & Health Disparities Research Center and senior associate dean for Diversity and Inclusion for the UAB School of Medicine. Harrison, who died in 1978, is immortalized on campus in a sculpture by Cordray Parker, installed in the late 1980s, that is made of bronze, stainless steel, travertine marble and concrete.
