April 15 Retro insideNearly 55 years ago, the Spain Rehabilitation Center opened on April 25 following a $500,000 donation from Frank E. and Margaret Cameron Spain (center), who were given a tour of the new facility named in their honor by hospital administrator Matthew F. McNulty Jr. (right). Hospital staff demonstrated a circular treatment bed, which allowed patients to be rotated into an upright position in order to help them regain muscle strength and regulate blood flow.

Today, Spain Rehab is a 49-bed rehabilitation hospital that features advanced, individualized care for recovering adolescents and adults, and patient care teams include physiatrists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech/language pathologist, psychologists, social workers, rehabilitation professionals and other clinicians from all areas of UAB.
