Transporting traditions

June 3 Retro insideIn the 1970s and ’80s, UAB used school buses — shown here in 1975 — to transport students from parking lots to academic buildings and university events. A precursor to the Blazer Express fleet, which was launched in 2014, these early buses were parked near the Ullman and Bell buildings.

On May 1, Groome Transportation began operating UAB’s transit service, launching a temporary fleet in May with plans to add a permanent fleet in spring 2020. Planned enhancements for the permanent fleet include automatic ramps and kneeling buses for easier entrance and exit for riders with limited mobility, audio-video surveillance for enhanced security, larger LCD displays, enhanced GPS tracking and quiet-ride buses. For UAB employees and students, Groome also will offer shuttle service for a nominal fee to and from Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Read more on the UAB Transportation website.
