At the start of the 1978 fall term, six computer terminals were designated to provide tutorial assistance for algebra and genetics classes and housed in University College Building No. 1 (now the Education Building). The terminals were part of a pilot project managed by the UAB Division of Special Studies, which oversaw credit and non-credit education, certificate, mini-term, weekend and youth programs, and believed to have been the first program of its kind offered in the Southeast.
Computer learning at UAB looks a bit different now: Within the university’s hybrid learning model, students will access a combination of online and classsroom learning this fall.
To help students succeed during this period, UAB will offer loaner laptops to students in need and virtual desktop technology for students who need access to lab or library computers and published apps and software while they are off campus. UAB also will reopen TechConnect in the Hill Student Center and continue offering public Wi-Fi in Express Lot No. 4. Read more online at uab.edu/uabunited.
