andy kennedy insideUAB Men’s Basketball Coach Andy Kennedy, right, played at UAB under Coach Gene Bartow from 1988-91, becoming a two-time all-conference performer who led the Sun Belt Conference in scoring at 21.8 points per game in 1991 and finished his time on campus as the basketball program’s second all-time leading scorer with 1,787 points.

Kennedy returned to UAB to coach Men’s Basketball in March 2020, a week after the NCAA tournament was canceled, a moment considered by many to be the first universal blow of COVID-related college shutdowns nationwide.

Despite the challenges, Kennedy achieved the most regular season wins by a first-year coach in Blazer history — 21.

This past weekend, UAB competed in the 2021 Conference USA Tournament, beating Rice 73-60 March 11 at Ford Center at the Star in Frisco, Texas, before falling to Western Kentucky in the semifinals March 12.
