This year, nearly four decades after Lazarus’ broadcast, the Alabama Broadcasters Association named WBHM Radio Station of the Year at its annual ABBY Awards ceremony March 29, a first for the station, which also took home awards for Andrew Yeager’s regularly scheduled newscast and Mary Scott Hodgin’s reporting.
Judges also were impressed by WBHM’s partnership with UAB Radio Paging during the launch of Birmingham’s first community COVID-19 testing site in March 2020. WBHM worked together with Radio Paging and other broadcast partners to establish a low-power radio signal at the testing site to give patients important testing instructions through their radio when tuned to 90.7 FM.
