You may qualify to participate in an international research study to evaluate the safety and tolerability of an investigational drug for patients with type 2 diabetes and kidney disease. Are you at least 18 years old? Do you have type 2 diabetes mellitus and a clinical diagnosis of kidney disease? Eligible study participants will receive study medications, blood pressure checks, physical exams, laboratory tests and ECG at no cost. Participants will be reimbursed for time and travel. The UAB Department of Nutrition Sciences is conducting a 60-week study to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational drug to treat Type 2 DM and obesity. To qualify, you must be age 18 or older, have Type 2 diabetes, and taking insulin or insulin in combination with zero, one, or two oral anti-diabetic medications. Qualified participants will receive study drug, diet/exercise counseling, EKG, physical exam, and diabetic supplies. To participate, you must be willing to take a daily injection and adopt a reduced-calorie diet and exercise program of 100-250 minutes/week. There is no charge for participation. You may qualify if you ages 19-45, are African American or European American, do not have diabetes, exercise less than 2 hours per week, and are willing to travel to UAB for screening and 4 testing visits. Participants will receive their blood sugar level, cholesterol level, bone density, fat mass, and muscle mass. Compensation up to $400 provided for completing all study visits.
