To enter, submit a YouTube video link to the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center at makemusicbham@uab.edu. As many as 12 finalists — announced May 21 on the ASC’s Facebook page — will receive a $250 stipend to perform a short set during Birmingham Makes Music Day, an outdoor music festival June 21 at the ASC. Three performers, selected by the audience and a panel of judges, will win $1,000 and studio time at UAB to record their winning songs. Details are online at www.AlysStephens.org.

The Herschell Lee Hamilton, M.D., Endowed Medical Scholarship honors the memory and work of the city's first African-American board-certified general surgeon, known for providing care to activists during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.

Christy Harris Lemak, Ph.D., will bring a national reputation, a record of accomplishment and a history of contribution to health-care management and leadership that will complement the department's nationally recognized programs. Her appointment is effective July 1.

The College of Arts & Sciences will open its new home for art instruction and professional galleries Jan. 16 to provide innovative opportunities for education, share the outstanding work of our faculty and students and attract acclaimed artists to UAB. New federal legislation has established the framework for a research network to study rare pediatric diseases, an idea UAB and Children's of Alabama have long championed. UAB Professor of Pediatrics David Kimberlin, M.D., who also is president of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, will represent Alabama on the implementation workgroup to coordinate with the NIH. UAB and Children’s will apply to become a primary site in the new network.

The UAB Adolescent Mentoring Program is seeking volunteer mentors, ages 21 and older, to provide positive, one-on-one experiences for moderate- to high-risk youthful offenders.
