sustainabilityRegister now for the UAB Sustainable Smart Cities Symposium, which brings green experts from around the world to focus on lessons in sustainability and the use of smart technologies. The June 12 event is free and open to the public.

Barbara McCann, director of the Office of Safety, Energy and the Environment within the U.S. Department of Transportation, will be the keynote speaker. In January McCann was appointed to oversee strategic planning for the department and its performance in areas of safety, livability and sustainability.

McCann, who founded the National Complete Streets Coalition, had been influential at advancing safer transportation policy at local, state and regional levels before joining USDOT. Her 2013 book, “Completing Our Streets: The Transition to Safe and Inclusive Transportation Networks,” identifies keys to the movement’s success.
