13 campus resources to help students beat the mid-semester slump

During the first few months of a semester, students can accumulate more questions about life as a Blazer than they had when they started.

One Stop Student Services

One Stop Student Services

One Stop Student Services, located on the first floor of the Hill Student Center, is a student’s best starting point for almost anything, from ONE Card issues to questions about financial aid or scholarships.

At One Stop, students can change addresses or phone numbers in person, check on the status of their financial aid, find out more about work-study programs, learn about credit equivalencies, get an official academic transcript, change their major or learn about on- and off-campus housing options, among many other things. A list is online.

Student Counseling Services and Student Health Services

Students seeking mental help or resiliency resources or working interpersonal or family issues can get assistance at Student Counseling Services, located in the Learning Resource Center. SCS provides individual and group in-person and virtual mental health services, prevention and outreach programming, crisis and emergency support. They also offer gender transition services and advocate for safe and inclusive learning environments in the university community. See a full list of services online.

Student Health Services is an appointment-based clinic for primary and specialty care, including sports medicine, nutrition and sexual and reproductive health. Located on Ninth Avenue South, appointments can be made online or by calling 205-934-3580.

UAB Career Center

UAB Career Center

College is a time for figuring out the future — and if students have questions about which direction they should take, the UAB Career Center, also located in the Hill Student Center, can help guide them to an answer.

The office hosts job fairs and maintains Handshake, which connects UAB students with part- and full-time jobs, internships and cooperative learning opportunities on and off campus. Students can also make appointments with a career advisor for personalized advice. Learn more online.

Vulcan Materials Academic Success Center

Vulcan Materials Academic Success Center

Students who need a boost in a particular class can visit the Vulcan Materials Academic Success Center, a supportive environment for students that provides tutoring, supplemental instruction, academic advising, success advising, workshops and study hours.

VMASC is located Sterne Library 222; make an appointment online for advising or tutoring.

University Writing Center

University Writing Center

The UWC, located in Sterne Library 175, provides in-person and virtual writing help at any stage of the process, whether its brainstorming ideas for a history paper, revising a personal statement or editing a lab report.

  • Off-Campus Student and Family Engagement
    The Office of Family Engagement works to strength the relationship between parents and family members of current students and UAB through programming, critical resources and regular communication.

    Off-Campus Student Engagement fosters student learning and development through programming and initiatives designed to serve and retain off-campus students. The Off-Campus Student Lounge is in Hill Student Center Suite 140.
  • Veterans Services
    Located in Hill Student Center Suite 313, the office assists veterans, service members, dependents and survivors in capitalizing on military educational benefits, such as finding scholarships, and promotes a successful transition into an academic setting.
