Scott Phillips, Ph.D.UAB has named Scott L. Phillips, Ph.D., vice provost for Innovative Teaching and Academic Engagement. Phillips is a 14-year faculty member at UAB who has directed the Center for Teaching and Learning since 2015; he will begin his new role Oct. 1.
In this newly created role, Phillips will continue to direct the CTL, and also will oversee several other units in the Office of the Provosts that work to deliver innovative teaching to UAB students, including Blazer Core Curriculum, National and International Fellowships and Scholarships, Service Learning and Undergraduate Research, the University Writing Center, the Quality Enhancement program, the Center for Interprofessional Education and Simulation and the ROTC program.
“Education is most effective when teachers engage students in the learning process,” said Phillips, who will focus on excellence and innovation in teaching as well as increasing student participation in high-impact and experiential learning practices. “Our goal is the rich learning that is achieved as teachers connect students to the curriculum, the campus and the community.”

Phillips also is an associate professor of music technology in the Department of Music and an established scholar whose interests include the use of technology in teaching and curriculum development. His book, “Beyond Sound: The College and Career Guide in Music Technology,” was published in 2013 by Oxford University Press.
“The creation of a new unit focused on innovative teaching and academic engagement underscores my commitment to ensuring that UAB students receive an education that is second to none and to advancing the goals of UAB’s strategic plan, Forging the Future,” said Pam Benoit, Ph.D., provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs.
The creation of the Innovative Teaching and Academic Engagement role comes as part of a reorganization of the Office of the Provost and the retirement of Steve Yoder, associate provost for Academic Administration, effective Oct. 1.
