GEAR UP Alabama (GUA) prepares high school students in Alabama’s Black Belt region for college, as well as helps them succeed once there.
Every academic year, UAB students, faculty and staff from disciplines across campus volunteer with GEAR UP on their Black Belt Friday trips, designed to connect GUA students with UAB and encourage them as they get ready for the college experience. Black Belt Fridays are open to all UAB students, faculty and staff, and participants say the trips are often just as rewarding for the volunteers themselves as they are for the GUA students.
