Food Study Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) are conducting a study to investigate how daily consumption of types of foods influences body weight and composition, and other outcomes related to the risk of certain diseases. If you are between the ages of 18-50 you may be eligible to participate. Participation involves attending 5 study visits, consuming a food item daily for 30 days, and acquiring measures related to body weight, body composition, and glucose metabolism. Women are needed for a study examining how naturally occurring bacteria in the gut may impact weight loss. Participation involves eating study-provided meals for 4 weeks, completing questionnaires, providing basic body measurements, and providing stool and occasional blood samples. Meals are provided at no cost and additional compensation is available. Eligible participants must be generally healthy African American or Caucasian women, age 30-50, currently overweight, and not currently pregnant or nursing. We are seeking volunteers with Type 2 Diabetes for a weight loss research study looking at the role of dietary protein in weight loss and the remission of type 2 diabetes. The study will last approximately 12 months. Participants will participate in a 16 week State of Slim group weight loss program and a 36 week State of Slim Next Steps weight loss maintenance program, with body composition scans and lab work at no charge. Participants will receive monetary stipends of $300 to reimburse for time and travel to study classes and study visits. You may qualify for this weight loss research study if you are nonvegetarian, 18 years of age or older, has Type 2 Diabetes diagnosed within the last 6 years, are overweight or obese with a BMI greater than or equal to 27. Must be willing to participate in weekly group weight loss classes for 16 weeks, bi-weekly weight loss maintenance classes for 36 weeks, and attend four study visits over 12 months at the Lakeshore Foundation Campus. Champion Nutrition Study in African American Women. UAB Department of Nutrition Sciences is conducting a nutrition study looking at the effects of diet in African American women. You may qualify if you are age 19-45, overweight, have not been diagnosed with diabetes, are not pregnant and are are willing to consume a prescribed diet and travel to UAB for testing visits. Participants needed for the ACES Trial - Antihypertensives Combined with Exercise for Seniors with Hypertension. This is a randomized, controlled trial (RCT) to determine if choice of antihypertensive medication influences changes in functional status and other cardiovascular risk factors among older persons with hypertension. Sedentary men and women > 60 years of age with functional limitations and hypertension will be recruited from two sites to participate in a longitudinal intervention trial. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three first-line antihypertensive agents and participate in a structured aerobic exercise intervention. This study is expected to differentiate beneficial effects of three FDA-approved antihypertensive medications on established and emerging cardiovascular risk factors in a clinically-relevant population. Are you a breast cancer survivor having difficulty walking? Do you have any lower-body pain that is restricting your mobility? If so, you may be interested in taking part in an exercise training intervention. UAB researchers are looking for overweight women  - age 18-70 with a body mass index between 30-45 kg/m2 - with a history of breast cancer to participate in a novel exercise training study. Volunteers will be asked to attend two assessment sessions: an initial assessment and after 8 weeks of exercise to collect information about your health status. Further eligibility screening will be conducted by telephone. Volunteers must reside in or near Jefferson County. The study will evaluate a novel exercise training strategy designed to mimic exercise at higher altitude to support improved health and mobility among breast cancer survivors. Contact Dr. Stephen J. Requires 8 visits to UAB laboratory and 3 blood draws over a 4 month period. We are currently seeking individuals diagnosed with spinal cord injury (SCI) for a research study evaluating diet. The purpose of this study is to determine if a low carb or low fat diet is better for helping adults with SCI: 1) stick to their diet, 2) improve their body composition, and 3) lower their cardiometabolic risk factors (such as diabetes, heart disease, or stroke).
