Do you have Parkinson’s disease and are currently able to walk without using any assistive device and are ages 50-74? If your answer to these questions is yes, you may qualify for our study. What will you do? You will wear activity monitors and a metabolic system; You will walk overground and on the treadmill. There is 1 lab visit that will last 2-3 hours. This study will advance the way we measure physical activity in people with Parkinson’s disease. Compensated with a $25 gift-card for participation. This study is to determine if a low carbohydrate or a low fat diet is better for helping adults with a spinal cord injury: 1) stick to their diet, 2) improve their body composition, and 3) lower their cardiometabolic risk factors (such as diabetes, heart disease, or stroke). Participation includes 2 visits to Lakeshore Foundation over six months to complete a series of assessments, including blood work, fitness measures and body measurements. If you enroll in the study, you will receive a diet and exercise plan, and you will work with a health coach for 6 months to follow your plan. You will also be given access to an on-line health coaching program called POWERS for 6 months. You will receive $50 for completing the initial assessments and another $50 when you finish the 6 month assessments. To participate in this study, you must: • Have a spinal cord injury • Have a BMI between 25-55 kg/m2 • Be willing to try a new diet • Have access to Internet or a smart phone This study is funded by the National Institutes of Health. Study subjects are being sought to help identify the risk factors involved in kidney stone formation. You don’t have to have kidney stones to participate. You cannot enroll in this study if you have been diagnosed with diabetes. Participants must be ages 19-65 and in relatively good health. What you will be required to do: 1. Answer questions to see if you are eligible to be screened for the study; 2. Provide 1 blood sample; 3. Provide up to four 24 hour urine collections during the study.; 4. Consume only meals provided by the UAB dietary kitchen for 3 consecutive days. Compensation is provided and there is no cost for participation. Are you a healthy person ages 18-40? You may be eligible to participate in a research study about the effects of Glucose on a protein in your blood. This protein is related to heart disease. Eligible participants must be healthy men and women, African American or Caucasians with no history of elevated blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems or kidney problems. Do you have a family member diagnosed with RA or do you think you are at risk of developing RA? If so, you may be eligible to participate in a research study about the possible prevention of RA. We are looking for participants who have been diagnosed with “Fatty Liver Disease” and who are NOT diabetic. We are also looking for healthy individuals with a history of kidney stone formation with a BMI between 20-40. All visits will occur at UAB and participants will be required to consume meals for three days that are prepared by trained UAB dietary staff. The meals are provided at no cost to participants and may be consumed at your location of choice. This study will also involve collecting your urine for two consecutive days.
