Ten graduate faculty were honored with the UAB Graduate Dean’s Excellence in Mentorship Award during a virtual reception Sept. 9. See what the award recipients say they learned from UAB’s up-and-coming scientists.

For his dedication to aging research and science communication, biology Professor and Chair Steven Austad, Ph.D., has been awarded this year’s Ireland Prize for Scholarly Distinction.

Twelve faculty have been selected to receive the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, which honors those who have demonstrated exceptional accomplishments in teaching. The 2020 honorees represent each school, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Honors College and the Graduate School.

The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees awarded the Distinguished Professor rank to Nancy Borkowski, Louise Chow, George Howard and Virginia Howard and the University Professorship rank to Eta S. Berner.

Caroline Harada, Burel Goodin, Tina Kempin Reuter and Allison Shorten demonstrated extraordinary commitment to engaging undergraduate students in service-learning, undergraduate research, education-abroad experiences and team-learning environments.

David Chaplin, Harriett Amos Doss, Stuart Frank, William Grizzle, Wendy Gunther-Canada, Robert Kleinstein and Andrew Rucks have been designated emeritus professors for exceptional service to the university and their profession.

Vineeta Kumar, M.D., professor in the Division of Nephrology, is one of 12 faculty selected to receive the 2019 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Loy Vaughan, associate professor of mathematics, clocked 50 years of service at UAB before retiring in January. The West End native remembers introducing the Apple II into the mathematics classroom in the late 1970s, playing handball with Gene Bartow and seeing his wife and children all earn medical degrees — all while watching UAB becoming the epicenter of the city in which he grew up.

Charlie Monroe, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, was one of 12 faculty selected to receive the 2019 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.   

Maninder Kaur, BDS, assistant professor in the Department of Periodontology, was one of 12 faculty selected to receive the 2019 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

John Kearney, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor in the Department of Microbiology, will be honored for 45 years of service to UAB during the annual Service Awards banquet March 6.

Keith Gurley, Ed.D., associate professor in the Department of Human Studies, is one of 12 faculty selected to receive the 2019 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

More than 280 employees with 20 or more years of service will be honored during the annual Service Awards Program luncheon noon March 6 in the Hill Student Center third floor ballroom. John F. Kearney, Ph.D., will be honored for 45 years of service to UAB, while Loy O. Vaughan, Ph.D., will be honored for 50.

Erika Austin, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Biostatistics, was one of 12 faculty selected to receive the 2019 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Gregg Gilbert, DDS, whose landmark oral health research connected practicing dentists with university investigators and earned the largest federal grant in UAB history, will receive the highest honor of the Academic Health Center.

Lisa Schwiebert, Ph.D., will receive the 2020 Distinguished Service Award from the National Postdoctoral Association during its annual conference in March.

Karolina Mukhtar, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Biology, was one of 12 faculty selected to receive the 2019 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Susanne Fogger, DNP, professor in the Department of Family, Community and Health Systems, was one of 12 faculty selected to receive the 2019 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

The fourth annual UAB Innovation Breakfast highlighted student, faculty, staff and community innovators for their contributions to research, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Assistant Professor Kannatassen Appavoo was one of 12 faculty selected to receive the 2019 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

The Blaze Leadership Academy program for faculty and staff returns with focus on mentoring, skill development and participation in the UAB Grand Challenge.

Professor Brenda Bertrand was one of 12 faculty selected to receive the 2019 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Sandra Cooper, environmental services specialist, is UAB’s Employee of the Year. Cooper was chosen from the Employee of the Month award-winners during a 13-month period ending in August 2019.

Barbara Gower, professor and vice chair for Research in the Department of Nutrition Sciences, is the winner of the 2019 Sam Brown Bridge Builder Award for her interdisciplinary, collaborative efforts across campus.

Edward Hook, Virginia Wadley Bradley and Mark Prichard were honored as emeritus professors for exceptional service to the university and their profession.
