In the 2017 Campus Engagement Survey, UAB employees identified career development as a key area for improvement. UAB Learning and Development (L&D) is launching two programs, Career Wise and Take Charge of Your Career, that can provide insight and information about the unique ways you can advance at UAB — such as learning from successful Blazers and identifying your own strengths, goals and areas for growth.

Get smart about your career

Career Wise, a five-part program from L&D that begins Feb. 14, is designed around UAB culture, values and structure to help employees navigate the university, clarify their career goals and build a support system that encourages success. Participants will complete a Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment, a 30-minute evaluation that uncovers your natural talents within 34 themes and identifies the top five, and learn about mentoring, stewardship, networking and other campus resources to promote personal development.

Career Wise is geared toward employees who work independently or collaboratively within a team environment and are early in their careers at UAB; manager approval is required. Register online; up to 40 participants will be accepted.

All sessions take place in Medical Towers Room 419A. Topics include:

Learn from UAB professionals

Together with Learning and Development, the UAB Staff Council is offering the three-part series, Taking Charge of Your Career, for the second year. The interactive and educational sessions will introduce employees to their career growth and development options at UAB.

The first session is scheduled 11 a.m.-noon Feb. 26 in the School of Health Professions Executive Learning Center Room 640. It will feature a panel of staff, including School of Medicine Associate Dean LaKisha Mack, Assistant Vice President and Controller Bernard Mays and UAB Facilities Director of Support Services Scott Moran, who will offer insights from their journeys to success.

Additional series topics, dates and locations will take place throughout the spring and summer and will be announced on the UAB Calendar and in the UAB Reporter.
