rep performance checkin 550pxAs part of the new performance-review process launched this past year in all campus schools and units, managers and their teams were encouraged to set professional and personal goals for each employee for fiscal year 2021, which ends Sept. 30, 2021.

Supervisors who have embraced performance review as part of their team-development strategies say the investment pays many dividends. “My job as a leader is to provide resources for our team members to learn and grow in their roles,” said School of Medicine Chief Development Officer Megann Bates Cain. “Performance management is an important coaching tool for me because it focuses on a holistic approach to developing the employee. It allows you to provide continuous feedback that enhances performance.” And what benefits the employee benefits the entire team and the university as a whole, Cain said. “Individual accountability makes it easier to foster teamwork. It’s an investment that has a large return on investment for the entire organization.”

To give supervisors and employees encouragement, tools and tips on a successful mid-year check-in, Learning and Development is launching a new virtual class, Halfway There: The Mid-Year Performance Check-In, 9 a.m. April 21 on Zoom. Participants will hear from a panel of UAB leaders, including Cain, who are passionate about performance management to develop leaders at all levels.

Class objectives include identifying components of performance check-ins, reviewing and evaluating best practices and time to begin to construct and schedule performance check-ins.

“Just seeing others grow, develop and move on to achieve their career aspirations or even personal growth is so exciting,” said Anthony Caminiti, director of Operations for Facilities, who also is a course panelist. “The other side of that, which is also very exciting, is seeing how others can further improve and contribute to the organization we are all part of. The opportunity to help others reach their potential is what drives me and gives me the greatest sense of accomplishment and fulfillment within my role as a leader.”
