new DSS training streamEmployees can learn about compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, explore best practices for engaging with students with disabilities, and access key resources during a new online training from UAB Disability Support Services.

Available through the Learning Management System, the training provides a general overview of opportunities to increase accessibility for students and takes approximately 15 minutes or fewer to complete; it is recommended for all UAB employees. “I encourage all faculty and staff to participate in the education and training opportunities offered by DSS to further support our efforts to make UAB an accessible, inclusive and welcoming community for people with disabilities,” said Paulette Dilworth, Ph.D., vice president for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

“I encourage all areas of our campus to work together with DSS to continue fostering UAB’s core commitment to diversity, inclusivity and equal opportunity for every student at UAB.”— UAB President Ray Watts

The training video is composed of three modules and a five-question quiz; Module 1 provides an overview of DSS services and employee responsibilities under disability compliance mandates and university policy, while Module 2 reviews the university’s process for reviewing student accommodation eligibility and the employee’s role in responding to a requested accommodation. Module 3 summarizes accessibility and universal design for instruction and explores how employees can work proactively to meet the needs of students with disabilities.

“UAB’s Disability Support Services office does a tremendous job supporting students with disabilities," said UAB President Ray Watts, M.D. “I encourage all areas of our campus to work together with DSS to continue fostering UAB’s core commitment to diversity, inclusivity and equal opportunity for every student at UAB.”
