Zebra900 - Zebrafish Husbandry Education Short Course

The short course is a hands-on learning experience, in which participants work directly with zebrafish and husbandry equipment.  Participants are divided into small groups each day to allow each participant maximal interaction with instructors and time to develop each skill. The groups rotate through all learning stations during the three days. Instructors guide the participants through covered skills at each station. Instructors also present personal tips from their experience.

There are stand-alone racks from sponsors on site for teaching of participants. This is useful to those selecting new equipment or starting up new programs. 

Most sessions last two hours and include:

  • Introduction to Aquatic Systems
  • Live Feeds 1 and 2
  • Spawning and Larviculture 1, 2, and 3
  • Cleaning, Disinfection, Quarantine, and Health Monitoring
  • Occupational Health and Safety in the Zebrafish Facility
  • Water Chemistry 1 and 2
  • Recognizing Sick Fish and Necropsy
  • Anesthesia and Euthanasia

Activities for participants include sexing fish, setting up spawns, harvesting embryos, collecting gametes, performing in vitro fertilization, cryopreserving of sperm, harvesting of live feeds, performing necropsies, measuring water quality parameters, and anesthetizing and euthanizing fish.

Most participants travel into Birmingham on the Monday of the Course for the Evening Welcome Reception and depart late in the day Friday or on Saturday.
