External Addiction Medicine Rotation

The UAB Physician Assistant Studies program welcomes qualified PA students from other institutions to apply for the four-week addiction medicine elective rotation. 

The opportunity is made possible through the program’s PA Training Enhancement Initiative, which was awarded $1,492,465 from HRSA. The specialized addiction medicine elective rotation will enhance students’ training in opioid and other substance use disorders (SUDs).

Visiting students will have the opportunity to complete their rotation at clinical sites within and surrounding the Birmingham area. In efforts to fight the pandemic that is substance abuse disorders, faculty within the UAB PA program will equip students with the tools to identify, treat, and counsel patients within the community.

Experience Hands-on Training

  • Understand and apply epidemiologic evidence to the screening, identification, treatment, and referral of patients with SUDs.
  • Understand the basic neurobiology of addiction and apply this knowledge to the evaluation and treatment of patients with SUDs.
  • Identify the substances associated with SUDs and how this affects the individualized choice of treatment.
  • Recognize, identify, treat, and refer patients with comorbid mental and physical conditions associated with SUDs.
  • Employ a greater understanding of SUDs to reduce the stigma associated with disorders.
  • Understand the laws and regulations governing SUD treatment.
