Nutrition Sciences Department 2The Master of Science in Nutrition Sciences, Clinical Track — Dietetic Internship, is a one-year combined dietetic internship and Master of Science degree program that will prepare you for an exciting career in health care, wellness, and food system operations. In this twelve month program you will get specialized practice experience in pediatrics, oncology, trauma, burn, eating disorders, and nutrition support. This accelerated program will enable you to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). This program is accredited by the Accreditation Council of Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) and the accrediting agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).

Certifications and Licensures

Successful completition of this program makes students eligible to sit for the Registration Examiniation for Dietitian Nutritionists offered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).


Dual Degree

Prerequisites for Admission and Program Curriculum

Prerequisite Requirements:
Students who are competitive for the Master of Science in Nutrition Sciences, Clinical Track — Dietetic Internship have an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.2 and GRE score (verbal + quantitative) of 300. Every part of the DICAS application and the Supplemental Application is used in the selection process and is reviewed by a committee composed of program faculty and preceptors.

If you do not qualify for the Clinical Track — Dietetic Internship, the Department of Nutrition Sciences offers additional Master of Science in Nutrition Sciences tracks that may meet your professional goals.


Admissions Requirements

  • Successful completion of ACEND accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) or completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university AND satisfactory completion of the DPD verification
  • Min. 3.0 GPA in nutrition specific courses over the last 60 sem. hours of earned credits
  • Min. combined GRE score of 297 on verbal & quantitative sections, OR a 410 on the MAT
  • Participation in the Dietetic Internship Centralized Application System (DICAS)
  • Participation in the D&D Digital match process
  • Submission of an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Didactic Program Verification or Declaration of Intent to Complete

Application Process

Applications are made through DICAS, a centralized application process and a digital match process via D∓D Digital and the UAB Graduate School.

Phase 1: DICAS

  1. Apply for the UAB Dietetic Internship through the Dietetic Internship Centralized Application Services (DICAS) portal by February 15.
  2. Send all application materials (except GRE scores) directly to DICAS.
  3. Submit official GRE or MAT scores to the UAB Graduate School. The institution codes you will need are:

  4. If you are an international student, submit official TOEFL score to the UAB Graduate School using the TOEFL Institution code: 1856. Mail the Financial Affidavit of Support (for international applicants only) to:

  5. Submit the UAB Supplemental Application (PDF) to the Program Director by February 15.
  6. Apply for computer matching through D&D Digital by Feburary 15. You will need to rank the programs in order of preference. Use the following codes:

    2. Off-campus Code: 442
  7. Applicants may be invited to interview with the Program Director during the application process.

Phase 2: UAB Graduate School
Students who are matched to the Clinical Track/Dietetic Internship and accept their position on April 8, 2018 will THEN apply to the UAB Graduate School. Career Paths and Job Opportunities

RDNs work in a variety of settings including hospitals, schools, public health clinics, nursing homes, fitness centers, food industry, universities, and in research and private practice. Employment of RDNs and nutritionists is projected to grow 21% from 2012 to 2022, which is faster than the average of all occupations.

Graduates of the Master of Science in Nutrition Sciences, Dietetic Internship — Clinical Track will be prepared for a variety of careers in healthcare, wellness, and food service operations including providing operational and resource management of food systems and developing modified diets. You will be able to assist individuals and families in choosing food for adequate nutrition in health or disease throughout the life cycle and also participate in nutrition research.
