The Van Zile Scott Lecture was endowed by a gift to the University of Alabama at Birmingham from Dr. and Mrs. Edward Van Zile Scott. The lecture enables the Department to bring outstanding speakers to campus who represent health services research and health administration practice.

Julie Adler MilsteinJulie Adler-Milstein, Ph.D.The 2018 Van Zile Scott Lecturer is Julia Adler-Milstein, Ph.D. Her lecture, titled “A Complex Interplay: Regulation and Market Forces in the Drive for Health Information Interoperability,” will be delivered on February 13, 2018, at Noon at The DoubleTree Hotel in Birmingham.

Adler-Milstein is an associate professor with the School of Medicine and director of the Clinical Informatics and Improvement Research Center at the University of California-San Francisco. She is an internationally recognized expert on policy and management issues related to the use of IT in healthcare delivery.

Her research assesses the progress of health IT adoption; the impact of such adoption on healthcare costs and quality; and the relationships between market, organizational, and team structure and health IT use. A core focus of her work is on health information exchange and interoperability. Adler-Milstein holds a Ph.D. in health policy from Harvard University. Her private sector experience includes the Center for IT Leadership at Partners HealthCare and Accenture Health and Life Sciences.
