Eta BernerEta Berner, Ed.D., professor in the UAB Department of Health Services Administration, is the second faculty member in the School of Health Professions to have two online courses certified by Quality Matters, a nationally recognized, faculty-centered, peer review process that certifies the quality of online courses.

The second course, HI 602. Clinical and Administrative Systems, covers all aspects of clinical information use in inpatient and outpatient facilities with a special emphasis on a clinician's work to support enterprise-wide health care delivery. It scored a 96 out of a possible 100 point in the QM review.

Quality Matters has developed a widely respected set of standards for the design of effective online courses and a rigorous, review process for applying these standards to existing courses. Through this process, reviewers provide instructors and instructional design teams with insight and recommendations that increase learner engagement, retention and satisfaction, and, ultimately, learner achievement.

Berner teaches in the Graduate Programs in Health Informatics and serves as director of the UAB Center for Health Informatics for Patient Safety/Quality (CHIPS/Q). She also oversees UAB’s Changing Healthcare Landscape: The Future of Health and IT, which are a series of online courses that train healthcare professionals to use health information in a wide variety of settings.

In 2015, Berner was the first in the School to have an online course earn Quality Matters certification when the company gave HI 640: Introduction to Health Informatics and Health Care Delivery a score of 98. Today, she and Elizabeth Barstow, Ph.D., FAOTA, director of the UAB Graduate Certificate in Low Vision Rehabilitation program, are the school’s only instructors with multiple QM certified courses.
