Nataliya V. Ivankova, PhD, MPH, is Professor in the Department of Health Services Administration with a dual appointment in the School of Nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She received her PhD in Administration, Curriculum, and Instruction from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) in 2004 and MPH in Epidemiology from UAB in 2014. During her doctoral studies at UNL, she worked as Research Associate and Research Projects Coordinator in the Office of Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research. Dr. Ivankova’s expertise is in qualitative, mixed methods and participatory research approaches and their applications across disciplines. As an applied research methodologist, she has served as the key personnel on numerous externally and internally funded studies examining the issues of health disparities, cancer prevention and survivorship, HIV and chronic pain management, patient satisfaction and health care organizational performance. Dr. Ivankova is nationally and internationally recognized for her scholarly publications addressing empirical and methodological aspects of qualitative and mixed methods research and her authorship of two books (Mixed Methods Applications in Action Research: From Methods to Community Action, 2015, Sage; and Mixed Methods Research: A Guide to the Field, 2016, Sage, co-authored with Vicki Plano Clark). Dr. Ivankova teaches graduate level courses in philosophy of science, qualitative inquiry and mixed methods research. She also mentors doctoral students, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty, and serves as a national consultant in mixed methods research. Dr. Ivankova is a founding Co-editor of the Mixed Methods Research Series with Sage Publishing. She serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Mixed Methods Research and Qualitative Research Editor for the American Journal of Health Behavior. She has also provided leadership to Special Interest Group Mixed Methods Research with American Educational Research Association and to the Mixed Methods International Research Association (MMIRA). Dr. Ivankova also serves on the Board of Directors for Horizons School in Birmingham, AL (post-secondary institution for young adults with learning difficulties). During the first eighteen years of her professional career, she served as a member of the faculty and also as Dean of Admissions at the Izmail State University of Humanities in Ukraine.
