The Joan S. Bergman Pioneer in Alabama Physical Therapy Award, to honor the founder of UAB PT and “to recognize significant and lasting contributions to advance physical therapy practice, research and education in the State of Alabama” was given to Jo Ann Clelland, PT.

Clelland was a UAB PT professor from 1969 until she retired in 2003 and currently serves as a professor emeritus. In 1985, she was the first to win the School of Health Professions’ top faculty honor, the Joseph F. Volker Award which is given to those who exhibit excellence in teaching, research, scholarly endeavors and service to SHP.

PT Leadership Award - Emmett Parker

Dave Morris Emmett ParkerEmmett Parker with MorrisThe UAB Physical Therapy Alumni Leadership Award, which recognizes “alumni who demonstrate outstanding service to the profession of physical therapy,” was given to Emmett Parker, PT.

Parker, a 1995 graduate of UAB PT, is the founder and president of AccelAbility Physical Therapy. This private practice, which began in 2003, has four clinics in the Greater Birmingham area. Parker has also served as the Alabama Physical Therapy Association’s Government Affairs Chair since 2006 and has been awarded both the APTA Legislative Commitment Award and the APTA Legislative Leadership Award.
