Soumya Niranjan, BPharm, MS, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Health Services Administration, is the winner of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center’s William C. Bailey Award for Excellence in Cancer Prevention and Control Research.

Niranjan, who has contributed to oncology clinical trials for more than a decade at multiple cancer centers, was recognized for her work for the paper titled “Trust but verify: Patterns of obtaining health information and the role of physician trust in decision making amongst patients with metastatic breast cancer”. The abstract, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology in October 2018, found that patient autonomy and trust in physicians are not mutually exclusive and these parameters together may play an important role in shared decision making.

Her research interests include health inequalities in cancer and chronic respiratory diseases with particular interest in understanding key contributory factors for these disparities. Niranjan is also interested in shaping policies that improve patient health outcomes in underserved communities.
