The SURPHER hero is recruiting participants age 18-40 who are non-smokers, generally healthy, and do not have a history of gout or diabetes. Eligible participants will receive study medication, blood pressure checks, physical exams, and laboratory tests at no cost.
Participants will be paid up to $525 for completed study visits.
To be included in this study you will need to:
- Have a systolic blood pressure at or above 120 and under 160 (top number) or diastolic blood pressure at or above 80 and under 100 (bottom number).
- Not be a cigarette smoker. Previous smokers can participate, if you have quit in 3 months or more before the study starts
- Not take blood pressure pills other than low doses of Cardizem (als known as Diltiazem), Plendil (also known as felodipine), and Norvasc (also known as amlodipine)
During the study you will be requested to:
- Complete 5 visits that are spaced about 2-4 weeks apart. The Total time of participation is about 12-14 weeks.
- Take a medication called allopurinol during specific durations of the study.
- Wear a blood pressure monitor on your arm for 24 hours at at a time (including while you are sleeping ) after the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th visit
As part of the study you will receive:
- Compensation for each visit. Compensation for the screening visit is mailed to subjects after the visit is complete. Subsequent compensation is sent after the 1st half and 2nd half of study visits are complete. Cash payments are not provided at study visits.
- Parking is FREE for all study visits.
