Dr. Walker has been involved with the CSCH for over three years and takes over from Dr. Suzy Davies, who is retiring from UAB. The CSCH is one of the 25 CDC-funded Prevention Research Centers, continuously funded at UAB since 1993.

“I am excited to continue working with the Center, and more importantly working with the people of Birmingham to improve lives and help revitalize disadvantaged neighborhoods. The Center is a key element in positive change in our city, and I look forward to having a part in continuing the great work the Center has been doing,” said Dr. Walker.

Prior to his time at UAB, Dr. Walker was a Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, a Professor of Health Policy and Management at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and a Professor and CJ Track Coordinator of Public Policy at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Dr. Walker’s research interests include neighborhood decline and revitalization, the relationship between social and physical environments of and health, and geospatial analysis. He has been funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse, National Science Foundation, National Institute of Justice, and others; and he is the recipient of several Excellence in Research awards.

“We wish Dr. Davies all the best and extend our thanks for her many years of service at UAB and throughout the communities we serve,” said Dr. Paul Erwin, Dean of the UAB School of Public Health. “We are extremely fortunate that Dr. Walker has already been significantly involved in the CSCH for several years, thus I anticipate a very smooth transition.”

Please help the UAB School of Public Health and the Center for the Study of Community Health provide Dr. Walker with a warm welcome.
