This award is based on UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Shared Values put into place by the UAB Staff Council and the Faculty Senate. The SOPH’s Shared Values Award was created in response to the UAB Campus Engagement Survey conducted in Winter 2019, which emphasized the staff’s request for more recognition of excellence in the workplace and the need for growth in visibility around Shared Values.

The 2021 recipient of the Inaugural SOPH Shared Values Award is Katie Adams, MPH, Program Manager of the UAB Sparkman Center for Global Health. In Katie’s nomination, it was described that she exhibits the seven shared values in her daily work at the Sparkman Center, including integrity, respect, diversity and inclusiveness, collaboration, excellence and achievement, stewardship, and accountability. Here are some excerpts from her nomination:

“Ms. Adams consistently exhibits excellence across all Shared Values, she embodies the Collaboration as well as Diversity and Inclusion values not only within the Sparkman Center and UAB, but also globally. She has been an integral part in the development and implementation processes of the Sparkman Strategic Plan. She manages Sparkman’s communication and media, and leads several collaborative projects across and outside of campus; thus, her work shapes the perception of the Sparkman Center, SOPH, and UAB in the global community. She is an enthusiastic advocate for students and is particularly resourceful as a returning Peace Corps volunteer from Nicaragua in planning and execution of international experiential learning for UAB students across the campus.”

“I am honored to have received the inaugural SOPH Shared Values award,” said Katie Adams, MPH. “When we talk about doing what is right for the right reason as a school, what I hear is a foundation for expanding parental leave at the university to match the American Public Health Association’s minimum guidelines. When we celebrate what makes us unique alongside what makes us one school, I see recognition that each member of our community brings their own strengths to the public health space – no matter if you are faculty or staff, on-campus or working remotely. I look forward to supporting SOPH as we embody our shared values in everything we do.”

The goal of the School of Public Health’s launch of the Shared Values Award is to not only recognize staff who put UAB’s shared values into action each day, but also to potentially inspire fellow staff toward excellence. All School of Public Health employees, including faculty and staff, are invited to nominate a staff member for this award in future years. The nominees are then reviewed anonymously by three staff members who have not been nominated for the award. The award’s full description and online nomination form is available on the SOPH Faculty and Staff Awards page.
