Meredith Gartin, PhD opens a new website, associate professor in the Department of Health Policy and Organization, has been elected to co-chair the Education Committee of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health opens a new website (CUGH), alongside Ivan Ezra Teri of George Washington University. The Education Committee plays a vital role in advancing academic global health programs by building capacity across disciplines, professions, institutions and countries.

As co-chairs, Gartin and Teri will lead efforts to develop and disseminate guidelines for global health education, support learning communities, provide resources for educators and trainees and strengthen training opportunities in resource-constrained institutions.

Dr. Gartin brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as co-chair of the Subcommittee on Master's and Undergraduate Degrees in Global Health since 2022. Now entering her fourth consecutive term in this position, her longevity is a rare level of sustained service within CUGH, where terms are typically limited to two with a possible renewal.

The Education Committee also includes several other subcommittees, such as the Workforce Capacity Building Subcommittee—co-chaired by Bhekumusa Lukhele, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy and Organization—along with the Educational Products Subcommittee, the Global Health Competency Subcommittee, the Academic Partnership Program Initiative and the Trainee Advisory Committee.

Dr. Gartin has chaired multiple Education Committee panels at the CUGH Annual Conferences in 2022, 2023 and 2025, bringing together speakers from across subcommittees. Her contributions to global health pedagogy are also reflected in her publications, with articles featured in The American Journal of Public Health, Pedagogy in Health Promotion (Special Issue on Global Health and Health Education), Health Promotion Practice, and The Lancet Planetary Health.

At UAB, Gartin’s service with CUGH has directly influenced the development of global health education. She serves as program director for the Global Health Studies Certificate program and led the design of the curriculum for the Master of Science in Global Health, a joint degree between the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine opens a new website and the UAB School of Public Health. Most recently, Gartin was appointed Faculty Fellow with the UAB Institute for Human Rights opens a new website, where she is focusing on education and outreach.
