EqualHealth is offering a Summer Immersion Course in Social Medicine from July 7-27, 2019 in Central Plateau, Haiti. It is open to graduate-level health profession students, and students should demonstrate the ability to speak and understand spoken and written Frensh. 

The cost of the course is $2,400 USD and includes the price of tuition, lodging, 3 meals a day, and in-country transportation. However, this price does not include a round-trip flights. 

Scholarships are availabel through EqualHealth and one could also apply for scholarships from Sparkman Center and the School of Public Health

Priority deadline was February 1, 2019 but are still accepting applications on a rolling basis until spots are filled!

UAB Sparkman Center for Global Health Internships Summer 2019

Purpose:

The Sparkman Center for Global Health (Sparkman Center) announces international global health-related internships and practicum opportunities for eligible UAB students for Summer 2019 (June-July). These travel awards provide elite educational experiences that enrich UAB students. Internships come with a $3,000 stipend to cover airfare and some living expenses.

 

Eligibility Criteria:

UAB junior or senior undergraduate students (3.25 GPA minimum), graduate, and doctoral students in good academic standing who will be enrolled at the time of travel are eligible for placement. (Domestic and International students are able to apply.)

 

Internships Available:

  • Jamaica: Caribbean Vulnerable Communities Coalition (HIV, Human Rights, and Policy)
  • Dominican Republic: Caribbean Vulnerable Communities Coalition (HIV, Human Rights, and Policy)
  • Panama City, Panama: University of South Floridat (USF) Health Panama
  • Kathmandu, Nepal: Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences

The deadline has been exted to Monday, March 4th, 2019. No applications will be considered prior to the application period nor will any late applications be considered for funding.

Complete and submit the online application (availalable soon on this page). Only electronic applications will be considered. For an application to be considered for selection, all fields need to be completed.

All necessary approvals for the training and potential foreign travel related to this award, including approvals from the UAB Office of Education Abroad and UAB Institutional Review Board if applicable must be obtained prior to the travel start date, but are not required to submit an application. Contact your departmental advisor and in case of School of Public Health students the Office of Public Health Practice at https://www.soph.uab.edu/ophp for further requirements and academic credit.

UAB School of Public Health Global Health Foreign Travel Award

Moses Sinkala Endowed Scholarship

In honor of the late Dr. Moses Sinkala, the Sparkman Center for Global Health and the Office of the Vice Provost for Student and Faculty Success have established the Moses Sinkala Travel Scholarship. This annual award is designed to assist UAB students complete an international internship or research opportunity. Five (5) awards of $2,000 will be granted.

Please note that scholarships may not be applied towards field courses, study away opportunities, or programs which require students to pay a fee for placement. Only UAB students in good academic standing may apply. Any UAB student is eligible for this scholarship. 

Interested parties need to submit the following:

  • Complete Application

  • Project Proposal

  • Synopsis of your background. Please include the intent of your project, goals, and a brief description of why you selected this topic of study
  • The name, phone number, and email of your contact abroad
  • Organizations or projects with whom you will be collaborating
  • Please state if the project requires UAB's Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval? If so, include a description of the review process for planned research
  • Budget specifying your total cost for this endeavor. Please include airfare, room, board, visas, immunizations, etc.

The proposal should not exceed 5 pages, double-spaced.

UAB School of Public Health Global Health Foreign Travel Award

Purpose:

The Sparkman Center for Global Health (Sparkman Center) and the Dean’s Office of the School of Public Health (SOPH) will provide travel funding for eligible SOPH students who are travelling internationally and attending an extracurricular academic/professional conference, training activity, Education Abroad program, or internship/practicum related to Global Health. These travel awards provide support for international educational experiences that enrich UAB SOPH students. The award may cover expenses related to transportation, lodging, poster printing, registration, and other international travel-related eligible expenses as specified by the travel regulations of the UAB Financial Affairs at https://www.uab.edu/financialaffairs/traveling

Eligibility Criteria:

UAB SOPH undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students in good academic standing who will be enrolled at the time of travel AND at the time of reimbursement are eligible for one UAB SOPH Global Health Foreign Travel Award of up to $2,000 each academic year and a maximum of two while enrolled at UAB. This award may be supplemented by other travel awards; however, other funding must be acknowledged on the Global Health Foreign Travel Award Application and total funding may not exceed total budget related to the travel.

Deadlines:

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis within the UAB fiscal year (Oct 1st-Sep 30th). The deadline to apply for travel thru Sep 30th, 2019 is Aug 1st, 2019. The travel award must be used in the fiscal year awarded. The application should be initiated approximately two months prior to travel start date.  No applications will be considered prior to the application period nor will any late applications be considered for funding. Eligibility for a given travel period is determined by the date at which travel will be COMPLETED (END DATE of travel on the application).

Application Process:

Complete and submit the online Global Health Foreign Travel Award Application (available at https://www.uab.edu/sparkmancenter/travel-scholarship). Only electronic applications will be considered. For an application to be considered for selection, all fields need to be completed. This includes, but is not limited to, the following information:

  1. Location of travel
  2. Purpose of travel & brief justification
  • Faculty mentor if applicable
  1. Collaborating organization, address and contact if applicable
  2. Correct estimated dates of The END DATE of travel is used to exclude applications that are not within the designated travel grant period. If this date is incorrect, your application will not be considered.
  3. Estimated categorized travel budget

Note that we are unable to consider applications that contain errors or are incomplete. Please ensure that your application is accurate before submitting. We specialize in providing analyses and recommendations to health care providers for use during pre-travel medical consultations. On a daily basis, the online Travax platform provides continuously updated data on international in-country health threats, risks, countermeasures, and resources. The subscriber base includes federal government agencies, Fortune 100 multinational corporations, NGOs, travel operators, public health agencies, major universities, and individual medical providers. Primary users are medical directors and other clinical personnel responsible for the health, safety, and medical needs of travelers and those posted overseas.

  • Part-time (up to 30 hr/wk) data-entry specialists in our Birmingham office
  • Perform data-entry and maintenance tasks related to a database system of overseas medical facilities.
  • There may also be data collection relating to medical suppliers, medical and occupational health providers, facilities, and medications.
  • Strong global perspective and excellent knowledge of world geography is required. 
  • Must be legally able to work in the US
