Student Affairs' Dr. Angela Stowe, director of Student Counseling Services, was recently selected as the 2021 fourth-quarter honorees for the UAB Shared Values in Action Program, the VIP awards.

Each year, the UAB VIP awards recognize 12 employees whose work embodies the institution’s values, including but not limited to integrity, respect, diversity and inclusion, collaboration, excellence and achievement, accountability and stewardship.

Dr. Angela Stowe began her career at UAB as a counselor when Student Counseling Services began in 2002. In 2005 she began serving as the director of Disability Support Services before becoming the director of Student Counseling Services in July of 2014.

Dr. Stowe says she was deeply moved to be recognized by her colleagues and administrators, “UAB has some exceptional people, it is a world-renowned institution.” As a director in the division of Student Affairs, Stowe believes this award shows the value that Student Affairs have on campus and how students are viewed as more than just who they are in the classroom, “that our division is a place where they have the support they need.”

In her role as director of Student Counseling Services, Dr. Stowe has made an impact campus-wide, whether she is training faculty and staff about mental health, advocating for programs with campus leadership, or guiding her staff. In addition to directing programs such as the Suicide Prevention Leadership and Implementation Team, the resurgence of the Collegiate Recovery Community, and providing counseling during the COVID-19 pandemic, she embodies UAB's shared values.

On nominating Stowe, Dr. Rebecca Kennedy, assistant vice president of Student Affairs said, “One of the most extraordinary things about Dr. Stowe’s impact is that it goes beyond students and her staff. She is counted on by administrators and faculty to help them as well.”

Dr. Stowe's work consistently exceeds expectations, and she is a leader administrators can rely on.

Even over the course of the pandemic, Dr. Stowe’s team at Student Counseling Services has taken time to reflect on current events and gear their efforts towards helping students overcome any number of difficulties whether that is stress caused by isolation, anxiety, or depression, “For her to provide students with hope,” Dr. Kennedy said, “and to provide a team with hope it’s a monumental task and she has done it with an innovative spirit.”

“I don’t believe any of us are VIPs without others,” Dr. Stowe said, “I love being at UAB and it is a privilege to come to work every day, especially the people I work with. I am grateful to have a leadership role, but I can’t take credit for all of the work.”
