Staff Excellence

Several Division of Student Affairs staff and departments received funding to continue their dynamic work. Congratulations to the following:

Dr. Angela Stowe

Dr. Angela Stowe, director of Student Counseling Services, has been accepted as a Faculty Fellow for Engaged Scholarship through the Office of Service Learning and Undergraduate Research. She will be awarded a $1,500 grant at the end of this year after completing a course with the other faculty fellows in the program. She will be developing the second course of the Peer Education program in Wellness Promotion and including a service-learning component in the curriculum.

David Dada

David Dada, coordinator of Leadership and Services for Student Involvement and Leadership, is participating in the Jean O’ Conner-Snyder Internship Program, a signature program of the David Mathews Center for Civic Life. The program seeks to partner with Alabama institutions of higher education to provide immersive learning opportunities for college students to build civic skills, develop civic dispositions, strengthen their civic efficacy, practice professionalism, and implement asset-based, capacity-building projects in Alabama communities. UAB’s 2017-2018 JOIP experience, The Woodlawn Project, will provide the opportunity for three paid student interns to compare asset-based approaches to community development in Birmingham and Chicago’s Woodlawn communities.

Maigen Sullivan

Maigen Sullivan, Gender & Sexuality Diversity coordinator in Student Multicultural & Diversity Programs, received a $3,000 grant from the Birmingham Community Fund for the Alabama Safe Schools Coalition. ASSC provides LGBTQ inclusion training for school teachers, staff and administrators across the state. This grant work will concentrate on the five-county area surrounding Birmingham.

Chris Jones

Chris Jones, director of Student Multicultural and Diversity Programs, has received a $5,000 grant from the Interfaith Youth Core’s grant competition titled "Advancing Leadership Practices" on public campuses. The purpose of the grant is to administer an innovative approach to interfaith work with students at a public university. SMDP will use these funds to implement a sustained interfaith dialogue during the Spring semester of this academic year.
