BLAZERS defeat golden eagles

After a frigid and heart-wrenching game the UAB Blazers managed to best the USM Golden Eagles, Saturday, November 10.

The Blazers trailed the Golden Eagles the first half. The drives that UAB carried out resulted in no score for them. The same could not be said for USM with the Golden Eagles first drive going nowhere they carried out a four play scoring drive that carried the ball 78 yards and gave them a 0-7 lead over the Blazers.

The score stayed the same through the remainder of the half but with USM in possession of the ball. Two minutes into the second quarter Southern Miss completed a 33-yard field goal making the score 0-10 USM. UAB was unable to complete either of their next two plays and were able to force USM to not make any scoring drives with their chances either, but USM did complete a 38-yard field goal for a 0-13 lead.

This time UAB did respond with a scoring drive that totaled 11 plays over 75 yards bring the score to 7-13 which was kept through the half. The second half began with a failed drive by USM, the punt by the Golden Eagles was blocked by UAB at the USM 16 giving the Blazers the energy needed to complete their second scoring drive of the game which was completed by a field goal 10-13 USM.

USM’s drive ended with no gain and the Blazers responded with a second touchdown of the evening giving them their first lead of the night with a score of 17-13. USM ran another drive and scored nothing, UAB’s next drive ran 10 plays moving the ball 30 yards, the Blazers completed a 30-yard field goal giving them a 20-13 lead they would carry into the end of the quarter.

Neither team completed any scoring drives the fourth quarter until 7:09 on the clock when USM ran a 75-yard scoring drive over 11 plays tying the game at 20-20. The Blazers tried to make a comeback in the final minutes for eh half but were unsuccessful to get an advantage over the Golden Eagles. Regular time of the game ended with a tied-up score of 20-20. Regular time began with the Blazers winning the coin toss and choosing to go defensive first, after three plays USM chose to take a field goal from a 37 yard taking the lead in overtime 20-23 UAB’s offensive chance came and after two plays the Blazers completed a 17-yard run into the end zone. The final score after extra time was UAB 26 - USM 23.
