Three weeks into the 2019 football season and the UAB Blazer’s are 2-0. The first two games of the season has not been a fairy tale start, but the team has found a way to remain perfect. After scraping by Alabama State at home, and going on the road to face Akron, the Blazers had a bad week to prepare for their upcoming opponent South Alabama. Coach Clark is having to find a way to replace 22 seniors that lead the team during the 2018 season. Losing numerous starters on offense and defense is no easy task to overcome.

On the road in Akron, the Blazers started strong and were leading 31-6 at the beginning of the 4th quarter. By the end of the 4th, Akron had scored two touchdowns, but the Blazers held on to win the game 31-20. The Blazers found success offensively through passing, with Quarterback Tyler Johnston III throwing for 319 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, the Blazers gave up 359 passing yards, but were able to hold Akron to 34 rushing yards. While this didn’t cost UAB the game, it is something the Blazers will need to get under control.

Heading into this matchup well rested against South Alabama is a great advantage for UAB. South Alabama is not as fortunate, coming off a loss of 42-6 against Memphis. The Jaguars will head into the game this Saturday with a record of 1-2 and will be looking to bounce back after suffering a heavy defeat at home. The Jaguars were held scoreless until the 4th quarter, scoring too little too late. This matchup will be the Blazers final test before they start C-USA play.

UAB and South Alabama each have a lot to play for on Saturday. Whether that be looking for a big win to continue a perfect season or getting back on track after a disappointing performance, fans on both sides should look forward to this matchup. The Blazers take on the South Alabama Jaguars this Saturday at Legion Field, looking to extend their winning streak at home to 14 games. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. and the game can be streamed on the NFL Network.
