Student Benefit

All currently enrolled UAB students who have paid tuition have access to services at the Student Health Services (SHS) Clinic. This access is granted as part of the Student Benefit, which allows students to see a healthcare provider with no out-of-pocket charge for a general office visit.

The Student Benefit is not health insurance.

Access to the SHS Clinic does not replace the major medical insurance requirement (BC/BS, United Healthcare, etc.) for all students enrolled in a degree seeking program. Health Insurance coverage is required by the university not only to help cover hospital and ER visits, but also to reduce the out-of-pocket costs of immunization shots, allergy injections, lab/x-ray costs, specialty procedures, and other medical services which are not included in the Student Health Services Student Benefit.

If an appointment involves tests or specialty procedures, then these services are billed to the student’s health insurance first. Once the insurance company has paid the portion of these charges that they will cover, the remaining amount will be billed to the student. Students at UAB must have major medical insurance. More information about the Student Health Insurance Plan is available in the Insurance/Waivers section.
